  • They were all roman citizens
  • All men
  • Signed up to fight for 20 years
  • They were awarded land or money
  • Had to be 20 year or older

  • Had to march 20 miles a day
  • Could not get married
  • Loyal to the generals sometimes
  • Loyal to the emperor sometimes

LEGIONS

  • Agustus come to power over 60 legions
  • Divided into 10 cohorts of up to 480 men
  • Each legion had 5,500-6,000 men
  • Each legion had a number
  • If a legion was destroyed it can never be used again

FORMATIONS

  • The romans fought on the groung behind the sun so Calvary could not cross and the soldiers were blinded
  • Phalanx thats were shields were placed side by side and spears in between shields
  • Tortoise shell formation where they put shields over their heads so that arrows or spears could not penetrate

WARS AND BATTLES

  • The Punic wars-Between Rome and Carthage from 264 to 146 BC
  • First Punic wars-The romans built a bridge to enter Carthage navy ships
  • Second Punic war-Carthage had a leader named Hannibal who attacked Rome with elephants
  • Third Punic war-Rome attacked Carthage and burned down the city
