ROMAN SOCIAL STRUCTURE

Rome had a very efficient way of settling jobs in life, such as slaves, or king. Similar to Egypt and India, Rome had 6 classes that which people in the area would work as.

CLASSES OF ROME

  • Senators
  • Equestrians
  • Common
  • Freed people
  • Slaves

SENATORS

  • was the politics of Rome
  • dominated by nobles, families where at least one member was a consul
  • were called 'novus homo', or "new man"

EQUESTRIANS

  • economists of Rome
  • could become part of the senatorial class if elected to the Senate
  • wore a tunic with narrow stripes (augusti clovi)

COMMONS

  • wore a toga to show their ranks
  • had the will to marry another Roman citizen

FREED PEOPLE

  • once slaves, but fought for their freedom
  • although no longer slaves, the free people still had restrictions they had to follow

SLAVES

  • were born to slave parents or were bought by slave owners
  • able to earn money to buy their own freedom
  • although slaves had no necessary clothing, they had a shackle on their neck, saying "I am a slave. Return me to my master, and you will be rewarded."
