Role and qualifications of a senator

The cursus honorum was a promotional senatorial ladder comprised of numerous mandatory and optional posts.

1) vigintivir: Every year twenty young men were chosen to serve as junior officials, assisting with law/prison management and coin minting.

2) tribunus militum: The vigintivir went abroad for military service as a legion's officer.

3) quaestor: A senatorial requisite involving the management of sums of public money.
