  • Mystical,supernatural, or exotic themes

ROMANTIC PERIOD

  • Originated in Europe
  • Reaction to industrial revolution and Age of Enlightenment
  • Approximately 1800-1850 at its peak.
  • Emphasized in visual arts, music and literature, politics, education, science.
  • Growth of nationalism (faculty.unlv.edu)

JANE AUSTEN

  • December 16, 1775-July 18, 1817.
  • Born in England, one of seven children of a rector
  • Spent her childhood reading and performing plays.
  • Novels: Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility.
  • Her work did not become popular until after her death (biography.com)

SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE

  • October 21, 1772-July 25, 1834, England.
  • Sent to boarding school after his father died.
  • Read incessantly, wrote poetry and played by himself.
  • Poems: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Kubla Khan.
  • Suffered from poor physical and mental health (faculty.unlv.edu)

MARY SHELLEY

  • August 30,1797-February 1, 1851, England.
  • Raised by her father after her mother died.
  • Married Percy Bysshe Shelley in1816.
  • Three of her children died, as well as her husband.
  • Novels: Frankenstein, Lodore, and Falkner(online literature.com).

DOROTHY WORDSWORTH

  • December 25, 1771-January 25, 1855, England.
  • Both parents died early in her life, sent to live with her aunt.
  • Brother William is also a famous poet.
  • Never married, lived with William all her adult life.
  • Journal: guide to the Lake District "Grasmere" (poetry foundation.org).

IMPACT ON LITERATURE

  • Pushed back against the machine era of industrial revolution.
  • Invited people to dream again,explore he supernatural.
