  • Romanticism was an artistic and intellectual movement
  • Originated in Europe
  • More interest in nature, emotion, and imagination
  • Rebelled against social rules
  • Took place between 1830 and 1865

WALT WHITMAN

  • Born in NY, 1819
  • Died in 1892
  • Was a humanist
  • Became on of the most influential poets
  • Later named "Father of Free Verse

WHITMAN'S EARLY LIFE/CAREER

  • Born to a Quaker family
  • Worked for a printer, was an editor
  • After that, it was hard to find work
  • He worked for several newspapers.
  • Wrote "Leaves of Grass"

CONNECTION TO LITERATURE

  • Helped contributed to the romanticism movement through poetry
  • Was a popular poet in the 1800's
