During the romantics period there was plenty of war and slavery and women's rights going on. There was a lot of debate going on so the romantics writers would write their stories or poetry to get away from all of the bad things going on around them. Eventually they got to the point where they were writing to celebrate the war being over. It was, "a reaction against rationalism".
