The First Triumvirate Falls

The First Triumvirate work together to control Rome around 60 B.C.E.

However, Julius, Crassus, and Pompey all wanted power for themselves.

Julius was very popular, and was elected as Consul. He leaves Rome to fight in Gaul (expanding Rome in the North/West)

Pompey was also leaves Rome to fight in Syria (expanding Rome in the east).

Caesar's Rise to Power

The Senate feared how popular Julius Caesar was, so they asked Pompey to take over as "dictator" (sometimes appointed in Rome to be the head of government)

Caesar returns to Rome, with his army (which was illegal for a general to do), causing another Civil War.

Caesar pushes Pompey into Egypt, allies with Cleopatra, and defeats Pompey in 48 B.C.E.

Caesar is appointed "dictator in perpetuum" or "Permanent Dictator"

Caesar rules as dictator for over 4 years; made reforms to help the poor and working-class citizens.

Roman Senators feared he would become a king. They conspire against Caesar, and murder him on March 15 44 B.C.E.

Rome descends into chaos. The people start to rebel against the Senate for killing their hero.

Rise of Caesar Augustus (Octavian)

A second triumvirate takes over: Octavian (Caesar Augustus), Mark Antony, and Lepidus

Mark Antony allies with Cleopatra, and is eventually defeated by Octavian

Octavian returns to Rome, renames himself Caesar Augustus, declares himself the (first) Emperor, and rules for 43 years

Caesar Augustus' rule begins the era of "Pax Romana" or "Roman Peace"
