ROME GEOGRAPHY

  • Settled in Italian Peninsula
  • Rugged mountains separating from northern Europe
  • Used river and Med Sea to trade
  • Fertile land to grow crops
  • Rome is far up north to escape enemies from the sea
  • Sunny and mild climate

THE RISE OF THE REPUBLIC

  • Rome benefited from the Etruscans
  • Rome then overthrew the Etruscan king
  • Growing through Italy
  • Then they told every man to go to the army
  • After they had a strong army and could conquer

GOVERNING THE RUPUBLIC

  • Two classes patricians and plebeians
  • Organized into three branches
  • One branch is made laws
  • Second branch is the daily affairs
  • Third branch is the judges
  • They had checks and balances
  • The consuls headed the government

  • Carthage was the enemy in the Punic Wars
  • The first war was caused because Rome wanted Sicily
  • First war Carthage
  • The second war was with Hannibal
  • Hannibal had 46,000 men and 37 elephants
  • Second war Carthage
  • Rome destroyed Carthage in the third Punic War

  • Wealthy people lived in comfortable houses
  • Not wealthy worked as shopkeepers
  • Poor people live in crowded neighborhoods
  • The gladiators fought in the colosseum
  • The gladiators were mostly prisoners
