ROMAN TRAVEL GUIDE

ROMAN THEATRE OF MERIDA

  • This theatre was constructed 15-16 BC and could hold over 6,000 people.
  • It was formally known as Augusta Emerita and was the capital Lusitania .
  • It suffered structural damage and is only partially reconstructed , mainly in its lower levels.

TRAJANS MARKET

  • This was one of the greater market places where Romans would meet to purchase items and conduct business .
  • It was constructed between 107 and 110 AD by Emperor Trajan's. Favorite architect Apollodorus was integral in the design.
  • Near this market was one of the more famous forums ,Trajan's forum , which is now heavily damaged.

THE COLOSSEUM

  • This massive structure was located in the enter of Rome. 55,000 or more could be seated inside at any given time.
  • There was the main field for events , and several rooms underneath where they would store animals such as lions, tigers, and wolfs.
  • This structure held everything from reenactments to gladiator battles.
  • Eventually over times this structure became a place of housing, workshops, and shrines .

THE PANTHEON

  • It is one of the most well preserved ruins in Rome.
  • The building was originally made for the worship of the Roman variants of Greek gods.
  • But was later converted to a shrine for Christians.
  • Despite being destroyed it was rebuilt and is how we see it today.
  • There is a hole in the roof were sunlight and rain could fall in to a large drain in the floor.

PALATINE HILL

  • This hill was the founding spot of Rome , it is thought this is were the original Romans
  • Remus and Romulus were raised by the She-Wolf.
  • It was mainly the housing area for the rich and powerful, people like praetors and Emperors .
  • It was founded in 753 BC and was one of the seven hills of Rome.

CONSTANTINES ARCH

  • This monument was built near the colosseum in honor of Constantine in the year 315 AD.
  • They did thus to commentate his victory over the pagan and false Emperor Maxentius.
  • Most of the art on the structure has nothing to do with him or his achievements .

CIRCUS MAXIMUS

  • This was a place near palatines hill were celebrations and games were held.
  • They used it for chariot races and gladiator games, it could hold over 250,000 spectators
  • It was built in 326 BC.
