Ancient Rome

Roman Arch:
An arch is a curved structure generally made of stone, brick, concrete or steel. Arches were not invented by the Romans, the Greeks, Babylonians, and Egyptians also used the arch.

Roman Arch pt. 2:
Unlike the Babylonians, Greeks, and Egyptians, the Romans used the arch to support large amounts of amounts of weight. To do this they made the arches out of concrete which made them very strong and sturdy.

Roman Arch pt.3
The Romans used the arch to build very large structures and buildings. Many cultures later adopted the Roman arch.

Roman Houses:
Wealthy Romans lived in nice houses, but the poor that could not afford houses lived in apartments. The outside of Roman houses were bare with very few windows to prevent burglary. The inside was made of shiny carved marble with many rooms.

Roman Houses p.2:
The inside had a dining room, bathing rooms, bedrooms, living rooms, a small entrance called the "vestibule", the masters office called the "tablinum", reception hall called the "atrium" and shrine dedicated to the Roman gods.

Roman Houses pt.3:
Roman apartments were usually five or six stories high. Even though the apartments had dining rooms, bedrooms, libraries and shops they weren't the best places to live. They often had problems like fires and lack of water.

Julius Caesar:
Many people consider Julius Caesar one of the best military leaders of all time. One of his best accomplishments was the conquest of Gaul. He gained popularity and became the most powerful person in Rome.

Julius Caesar pt.2:
His enemies didn't like his popularity and power and planned to kill him. On march 15 two of his former enemies stabbed him to death.

Octavian Augustus:
After Julius Caesar was assassinated, Mark Anthony decided to take control of Rome. Octavian Augustus, Julius Caesar's nephew and adopted son, raised an army to fight Mark Anthony. Octavian defeated him and became one of Rome's two
consuls.

Octavian Augustus pt.2
Octavian was probably the most important figure in Roman history. He stopped the advancing decay of the Republic and created a new system for Roman government called "principate." Octavian Augustus later changed his name to Augustus Caesar.

Other Roman Leaders:
After Augustus died Tiberius took over, next Caligula, then Claudius, continuing with Nero, Galba, Otho, Vitellius and so on.

Roman Gods:
Most of the Roman gods are almost exactly the same as Greek gods but with different names. The main gods and goddesses in Rome are Venus, Apollo, Mars, Diana, Minerva, Ceres, Pluto, Vulcan, Juno, Mercury, Vesta , Saturn, Proserpina, Neptune, and Jupiter.

Romulus and Remus:
Romulus and Remus were twin brothers. The legend says they were abandoned by their parents. They were put in a basket and placed in the River Tiber. A female wolf found them and took care of them until a Shepard found the two boys and took them in.

Romulus and Remus pt.2:
When Romulus and Remus grew up they decided found the city the wolf found them in. They fought over who should be the true founder, so Romulus killed his brother and became the founder of the new city he named Rome.

Romulus and Remus pt.3:
The story of Romulus and Remus is only a legend, the real story of Rome took a lot more time and effort. There were settlements that were around the hills that were near the River Tiber. The settlements were separated by marshlands and often fought with each other. They eventually destroyed all the marsh lands and joined together.

Roman Republic:
Rome was controlled by three branches of government. The oldest was the senate, it was also the most powerful. It was ruled by the patricians; nobleman who were very wealthy. The second branch was the assembly.

Roman Republic pt.2:
The plebeians; tradesmen, craftsmen. and farmers elected representatives that protected them. The third branch was up of two consuls that were elected by the assembly, the two consuls were very powerful and important.

Latin Language:
Latin was originally spoken in the Region around Rome called Latium. It eventually became the formal language of the Roman Empire.

Latin Language pt.2:

The Latin language is the base of the Romance languages: French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian. Latin also influences many terms and phrases in English.

Roman Numerals:
The Roman number system is very different than ours today. The Romans based their number system off of their alphabet, and the rules for their number system is very different from ours and quite complicated.

We still use Roman numerals today in books, clocks, movies etc., but the Arabic system we use today is much simpler.
