What was he like... in his later years?

Reagan graduated in 1932 and became a radio sports announcer. In 1937, Reagan signed a 7- year contract and for the next 3 decades, appeared in 53 films. His last film was released in 1964 and was called The Killers. He was later elected Governor of California in 1966 and reelected in 1970. He was elected president in 1980.

What took place in Reagan's presidency?

On March 23, 1983, President Reagan announced the idea of the development of the technology to intercept enemy nuclear missiles. This was known as the Strategic Defense Initiative or Star Wars.

The Strategic Defense Initiative (S.D.I.) was meant to develop the technology to protect the country in case of a missile attack. It would intercept their missiles. This affected the country by making it feel safer and protected but also affected the Soviet Union by threatening them and laying down the law. This was going to end the Cold War for good.

The S.D.I. was not exactly the reason the Cold War ended because it wasn't completely developed by the end but we still use the S.D.I. in case of nuclear or missile attacks on our country. Today, president Obama is making decisions to help other countries protect from bigger threats.

Connection to U.S. history lesson:

This ties into the Civil War because it is like a battle strategy. We learned that in the Civil War, army generals agreed on rules for battle- no surprises. This however, was a huge surprise not only for those included in the Cold War but everyone in the world!

Did Reagan end the Cold War?

Ronald Reagan was a huge part of the end of the Cold War. He took charge and said "Take down the Berlin wall" and used the S.D.I. to threaten the Soviet Union. The end of the Cold War was when the Soviet Union collapsed and the U.S. had the highest military power.
