ROTATOR CUFF TEAR

INTRODUCTION

  • A rotator cuff tear is a tear of one or more of the tendons of the
  • Four rotator cuff muscles:
  • Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Minor, Subscapularis
  • Stabilizes the glenohumeral joint and the rotation of the humerous

MOI

  • overuse, fall on an outstretched arm
  • excessive ROM
  • commonly occurs in softball/baseball or throwing sports

EVALUATION

  • MRI, X-Ray, and Ultrasound
  • best to be repaired surgically
  • Doctor will examine your range of motion, stability, strength, 
  • blood flow, reflexes, and sensation
  • Ex: Drop arm test, the touchdown test and etc.

Early Treatment

  • gameready and stem
  • bands and arm bike
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication
  • Steroid injection like Cortisone

Functional rehab

  • throwing
  • push-ups
  • weights (light)
  • finger walks on wall

Return to sport

  • Your shoulder feels as strong as the uninjured one
  • You have almost normal range of motion
  • You can function as well as before the injury
  • Return in 2-3 months, Athletes should ease back into their sport
  • If injured during baseball, gentle tossing instead of fast pitches
