PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Routes of Administration

The Five Pathways

The 5 Ways for Drugs to Enter the Systems

  • Inhalation
  • Injection
  • Mucous Membrane Absorption
  • Oral Ingestion
  • Contact Absorption

Inhalation

  • Smoking- Cigarettes, Joint/Blunt
  • Vaping- E-cigs
  • Huffing- Nitrous Oxide, Airplane Glue, Isoamyl Nitrate
  • Effects felt in 7 - 10 seconds
This is the fastest method for feeling feeling the effects of a psychoactive drug.

Easily regulated.

Most of the drug is lost in this method because its not all absorbed into the capillaries in the lungs.
Example: 60% of the THC is exhaled after a person inhales a drug.

Injection

  • Drugs are injected directly into the body
  • Intravenously- IV, Slamming, Main Lining
  • Subcutaneously- Skin Popping- Under the Skin
  • Intramuscularly- IM, muscling- into a muscle mass
  • Effects felt in 15-30 seconds (IV), or 3-5 min. for (IM, SC)
Produces an intense rush instead of a euphoric high

Most dangerous of the methods

Mucous Membrane Absorption

  • A drug is snorted into the nose
  • Effects are more intense and occur more quickly than orally
  • 10-15 Minutes
  • Sublingually- Under the Tongue; Cocoa Leaves
  • Buccally- Between Gums and Cheek; Dip/Chew

Oral Ingestion

  • Drug is swallowed and passes to the small intestine
  • 20-30 Minutes
  • Drug passes through liver first
Drug passes through the esophagus and the stomach to the small intestine, where it is absorbed into the capillaries enmeshed in the intestinal walls.

Women have a higher BAC after drinking the same amount as a man due metabolism.

Contact Absporption

  • Drug Saturated Adhesive Patches
  • Nicotine, Fentanyl, Clonodine, etc.
  • 1-2 days to take full effect
  • Can last up to 7 days
Opium addicts will eat the morphine and fentanyl but often OD because they miscalculate the amount of drug left on the patch.

Drug Distribution

  • Bio Availability- The degree to which the active ingredient
  • become available to the target tissues after administration.
  • Can be present in urine and hair so drugs are detectable for long after
  • Any psychoactive drug will eventaully circulates and travels to and
  • through every organ, fluid and tissue in the body.
