PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Rules Of Exponent

Graceanne Marshall

Zero Exponent

  • Any nonzero number with an exponent of zero is equivalent to 1.

Any number with the exponent at 0 always equals 1.

Examples

  • 61^0 = 1
  • 2^0 = 1
  • 90^0 = 1
  • 1000^0 = 1

Product of powers

  • If multiplying 2 numbers with the same base, ADD the exponents.

If you have two numbers (While multiplying) when the base is the same then add the exponents.

Examples

  • y^4 • y^3 • y^1 = y^4+3+1 = y^8
  • 5^2 • 5^6 = 5 ^2+6 = 5^8

Quotient of Powers

  • If dividing two numbers with the same base, SUBTRACT the exponents.

If you have two numbers (While dividing) when the base is the same then subtract the exponents.

Example

  • y^6 / y^1=y^6-1=y^5
  • 6^13 / 6^2=6^13-2 =6^11

Power of a Power

  • If raising a power to a power, multiply the exponents.

If an exponent is being squared to another exponent, multiply them

Example

  • (4^3)^3= 4^3•3= 4^9
  • (4^2)^2= 4^2•2= 4^4
