• Russian folk music was mostly vocal, and was often called controlled screaming due to its high association with the chest register.

STYLISTIC FEATURES

• Authentic folk music - This is very entwined with village life and traditions, and is usually not performed by professional musicians. They can also have strong religious components.
• Folkloric music - This is composers who have taken genuine folk music and performed it in a modern way while keeping the authentic folk music.

SOCIAL CONTEXTS

• Ethnic music in Russia was usually not composed y professional singers. Primarily vocal, ordinary people sang it from day to night. It reflected the seasons and the villagers lives.

HISTORICAL INFLUENCES

• Ethnic Russian music has a long tradition. It began combined with other types of music until the folk choir ensemble created by Mitrofan Pyatnitsky. There was also mass music, music for the masses, but after World War II that lost its appeal and folkloric music became popular.
