AGRICULTURE

  • Overwhelming agricultural economy.
  • Constitutes the main economic activity for the rural households.

POPULATION PROBLEMS

  • Rwanda held one of the highest populations in Africa.
  • 85% of the population were Hutus while the remainder were mainly Tutsi.
  • The ruling Belgians favored the minority of Tutsi, this caused tension.

  • Ethnically motivated violence raised after Belgians favored the Tutsis.
  • Hutu revolution in 1959 forced 300,000 Tutsis to flee.
  • Burundi's President, Cyprien Ntaryamira was shot down in a plane.
  • Extremist from the Hutu and the Tutsis ganged up to perform mass violence against each other.

Cyprien Ntaryamira

  • 1972: He entered school in Bujumbura, but after an abortive Hutu rebellion in 1972, he and thousands of other ethnic Hutus fled the country
  • 1982: Ntaryamira eventually received a degree in agriculture from the National University of Rwanda in Butare in 1982.
  • 1986: In August 1986, he became a founding member and economic policy director of the Hutu-dominated Front for Democracy in Burundi party.

  • Presidential guard and Rwanda armed forces joined in on the scenario.
  • Interahamwe - a terrorist organization that seeks to overthrow the government dominated by Tutsi and to institute Hutu control again. (“Those Who Attack Together”)
  • Impuzamugambi - a Hutu militia in Rwanda formed in 1992. (“Those Who Have the Same Goal”)
  • Prime Minister Agathe Uwillingiyimana and her 10 body guards.

Agathe Uwillingiyimana

  • Agathe Uwilingiyimana, sometimes known as Madame Agathe, was a Rwandan political figure. She served as Prime Minister of Rwanda from 18 July 1993 until her death on 7 April 1994. Her term was ended when she was assassinated during the opening stages of the Rwandan Genocide. She was Rwanda's first and so far only female prime minister.
  • Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana, a moderate Hutu, was assassinated. Her murder was part of a campaign to eliminate moderate Hutu or Tutsi politicians, with the goal of creating a political vacuum.

Violence continues to grow

  • Between April and June of 1994, an estimated 800,00 Rwanda civilians are pronounced dead.
  • Over 200,000 people participated in the genocide.
  • Lead up to the U.S. banishing the term "genocide" for any use by a U.S. official.
  • Propoganda was being used on television and radios, promoting the killing of more Hutu and Tutsis members.

  • Thousands of Hutu murdered. Men, women, and children perished.
  • Mass violence continues, even today.
