  • Literacy rate 71%
  • Child mortality 111 children die before age five
  • 18% of children under five are underweight
  • Number of children Who have lost one or both parents 690,000!

POVERTY AND HEALTHCARE

  • In 2000 through 2010, only 221 physicians were registered in Rwanda
  • Around 140,000 adults are living with HIV or AIDS
  • 130,000 children have lost one or both their parents to the disease
  • Over 90,000 families have received a cow!

FOOD AND DAILY LIFE

  • Four-fifths of Rwandans live in rural areas
  • Kigali (the capital) is called the african Singapore for its clean streets and low levels of crime
  • As well as cooking potatoes Rwandans love french fries!
  • Everyday meals consist of beans veggies or meat stew, sounds good!

PEOPLE AND CULTURE

  • Rwanda has a huge tradition of celebrations involving music and dance.
  • Over two-thirds of Rwandans are Christian.
  • English and Swahili are helpful when dealing with their trading partners east Africa
  • Celebratory dances are often backed by an orchestra of drums

GEOGRAPHY & WILDLIFE

  • Rwanda is a small landlocked country. Mountains run down its western side
  • Originally covered by rainforest, farming over the last 2,000 years has wrecked Rwanda's vegatation
  • The regal sunbird in the picture is known for its majestic body as suggests in the name
  • the Virunga Mountain Range is volcanic with six active volcanoes! And three extinct ones

CLIMATE AND AGRICULTURE

  • Rwanda's two main crops are tea and coffee
  • For local consumption the most popular crops are plantains bananas,beens,potatoes
  • Plantains bananas are very important to Rwandans almost two thirds of farmers earnings are plantain bananas
  • Temperature and rainfall vary between north and east in the east its very dry but in the northern mountainous area has lots of rainfall

ECONOMY & INDUSTRY

  • Rwanda's economy is based strongly on agriculture with four-fifths of Rwandans are small farmers
  • Outside of farming many Rwandans are also self employed or working in small cottages
  • Rwanda ranks number eleven for starting businesses
  • Tourism is now the country’s largest source of earnings for foreigners

EDUCATION & JOBS

  • In Rwanda, primary education is now free for children ages six-seven
  • Since education became free the number of children going to school massively raised
  • During the colonial period Rwanda was under the power of Belgium
  • Four fifths of workers in Rwanda earn their living from agriculture

HISTORY & POLITICS

  • In 1935, all Rwandans were issued with an identity card
  • Paul Kagame won presidential elections again in 2010
  • Twa people rarely achieved the status of Tutsi
  • The minority Tutsis were favoured and resentments grew
