BASICS

  • Was under rule of Germany and Belgium
  • Officially became country on July 1, 1962
  • Founded by Germans in 1884
  • Previous Name: German East Africa

COLONIZATION

  • Germany colonized Rwanda in 1884 as part of German East Africa, followed by Belgium, which invaded in 1916 during World War I. Both European nations ruled through the kings and perpetuated a pro-Tutsi policy. The Hutu population revolted in 1959.

SIMON BIKINDI

  • Popular singer-songwriter in Rwanda
  • Made patriotic songs which were played on national radios during the civil war and genocide
  • He was tried and convicted for incitement to genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in 2008

RWANDA'S GENOCIDE I

  • April 6, 1994, the president was killed in a plane crash where rockets hit the plane
  • Many massacres and rapes followed
  • Presidential Guards started killing Tutsi civilians in a section of Kigali
  • Roads blocked by Hutu militiamen and military personnel were set up to identify Tutsis

RWANDA'S GENOCIDE II

  • April 7, 1994, a radio station aired a broadcast & accused RPF, contingent of UN Soldiers, and "Tutsi cockroaches" of having something to do with the plane crash
  • Many assassinations were committed towards political figures
  • UNAMIR went from 2,165 soldiers to 270 as of April 21st

RWANDA'S GENOCIDE III

  • June 22, the Security Council authorized French-led forces to mount a humanitarian mission
  • Operation Turquoise, saved hundreds of civilians in South West Rwanda, but is also said to have allowed soldiers, officials and militiamen involved in the genocide to flee Rwanda through the areas under their control
  • In other areas, killings continued until 4 July 1994 when the RPF took military control of the entire territory of Rwanda
