WHAT IT WAS AND HOW IT STARTED

RWANDA BEFORE THE GENOCIDE

  • Rwanda was a peaceful nation with very little ethnic difficulty
  • Belgium had colonized and made Tutsis more educated
  • Hutus rebelled and killed 800,00 Tutsis
  • Many Tutsis left and the population became a minority
  • Life became peaceful till 1994

1994 TO THE END

  • Threats from exiled Tutsis became imminent.
  • Country became nervous from threats
  • Peace talks started
  • President Habyarimana's plane shot down
  • Country goes into a frenzy

INTERAHAMWE

  • Organized by Anaste Gasana
  • Colorful uniform
  • Used machetes and guns
  • High on drugs and alcohol
  • Sang denouncing songs.

THE FRENCH

  • French troops landed to help Hutus
  • Realized what was happening and rescued Tutsis
  • Brought them to RPF
  • Provided food and clothing

IMACULEE ILIBAZIGA

  • Survivor of the genocide
  • Hid in bathroom with six others for 6 months
  • Couldn't move a muscle for hours
  • Escaped three Interahamwe searches
  • Now lives in US and works for UN

EFFECTS OF THE GENOCIDE

  • All of the country was broke
  • No buildings or houses intact
  • Paul Kagame becomes President
  • Huge psychological effect on locals
