  • Absence of gravity
  • Fluctuating temperatures
  • No air pressure

COSMIC RAYS AND RADIATION

  • Cosmic rays can tremendously increase your chance of getting cancer
  • Exposure to cosmic rays cannot be prevented while traveling through space
  • Scientist are currently trying to reduce the amount of cosmic rays that affect astronauts
  • Polythylene plastics or antioxidants may be used in the future to reduce the effects of the rays
In order to travel to Mars the amount of cosmic rays astronauts are exposed to will need to be reduced.

DEBRIS IN SPACE

  • Debris in space travels at speeds up to 17,500mph
  • They can easily explode into a ships inner wall and kill astronauts
  • Outer walls on spaceships are being designed to protect Astronauts from debris

ABSENCE OF GRAVITY IN SPACE

  • There is a very small amount of gravity in space
  • The lack of gravity can lead to bone loss and the shrinking of muscles
  • Astronauts who return to Earth from orbit are weaker than when they went to space
  • A small elliptical spinning room in the ship would combat the lack of gravity
  • The spinning room would create a gravitational pull in the center and simulate gravity
