DYING & RISING with CHRIST

  • To enter the kingdom of heaven must be born again of water & the Spirit
  • Commission to preach & baptize
  • Immersion in water = sign of death
  • Emersion from water = sign of new life
  • Buried with Christ in Baptism
  • Raised with Him through faith in the power of God who raised Him from the dead

WHO CAN BAPTIZE?
Ordinary Ministers: Bishop, Priest, Deacon
Necessity: Anyone, even non-baptized person using water & Trinitarian baptismal formula with intention to do what the Church does when she baptizes

  • Baptism of Adults
  • Baptism of Infants
  • Baptism of Blood
  • Baptism of Desire

EFFECTS of BAPTISM

  • Sins Forgiven
  • Adopted Children of God
  • Initiated into the Church
  • Bonded to Other Christians
  • Baptismal Character or Mark

  • Increase & deepening of grace of Baptism
  • Roots us more deeply as adopted sons & daughters of God
  • Unites us more fully to Christ
  • Increases the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in us

  • Gives us special strengths of the Holy Spirit: to spread & defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses to Christ; to confess the name of Jesus boldly; and, never to be ashamed of the Cross

  • Wisdom: see the world from God's point of view
  • Understanding: to know ourselves as part of knowing God
  • Knowledge: contemplation or thoughtful reflection on mystery of God - Father, Son & Holy Spirit; and Mysteries of our Catholic faith

GIFTS of the HOLY SPIRIT

  • Fortitude/Courage: trust that we can be counted on to stand up for Christ
  • Counsel/Right Judgment: sense quiet teachings of the Holy Spirit
  • Piety/Reverence: act of respect for Father who created us, Son who redeemed us, Holy Spirit who sanctifies
  • Fear of the Lord: wonder & awe in God's presence
