Hot Topic: Safe Driving

  • Safe driving is always an extremely hot topic.
  • In 2011, 32,000 people died from motor vehicle accidents.
  • This caused a astounding $200 billion dollars in societal costs.
  • Of these accidents, 25% were caused by a driver talking on a phone.
  • Yet despite the research and facts people still drive distracted...

Campaigns for safe Driving

  • In early October, NETS launched it Drive Safely to Work Week.
  • Soon after CVSA launched their Operation Safe Drive Campaign.
  • Through these, each organization hopes to bring change to the way we drive.
  • Here are three of the main points outlined by these campaigns.

Don't use a phone

  • Using a phone while driving is a major risk.
  • This means phone calls, text messages, and even blue tooth.
  • All three of these things create what is known as "inattention blindness".
  • This causes drivers to miss 50% of the information in their environment.
  • This "inattention blindness" is the direct cause of many accidents.

Well maintained vehicles and Drivers

  • Having a up-to-date and well maintained vehicle is crucial.
  • Routinely check fluids, tires, lights, breaks, etc..
  • Also make sure you and your drivers are ready to be behind the wheel.
  • A driver that is tired or sick is just a dangerous as one on a phone.
  • To avoid this pack snacks and take stretch breaks every so often.

Be an Active Driver

  • Always be conscious of the rules of the road
  • This involves: following speed limits, following distances, etc...
  • By being proactive you can watch out for yourself and others.
