The Saint was known for translating the original Greek Hebrew Bible to Latin. He works on it in his study.
Near him sits his lion sleeping, the lion accompanies him as a trusty friend after Saint Jerome pulled out a thorn from its paw.
The lion sleeps peacefully next to a bird which shows it isnt aggressive and has been trained.

MY OWN INTERPRETATIONS:

The Christ- symbolises his religion and his faith. Maybe this is kept as a reminder to be good.

Venice (in the background) - maybe he misses it thats why its in the background. also shows what he ran away from.

Animals - Shows trust between everyone in the picture, could also show how if you anger or wake the tiger it could be violent. maybe reflects Saint Jerome himself. possible action?

Open cupboard - Recently used books, studying for something? shows he is educated.

Hat - could be a womens hat? a past lover who could have left or passed away. Maybe the saint misses her.
