BIOGRAPHY

  • St. Teresa was a Spanish mystic, Roman Catholic saint, author during the Counter Reformation, and theologian of contemplative life through mental prayer. She was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered to be a founder of the Discalced Carmelites along with John of the Cross.
  • She was a Carmelite nun
  • She was born in 1515 and died in 1582

Becoming a saint

  • Saint Teresa was canonized by pope Gregory XV 40 years after her death
  • To be canonized is to be declared a saint after one has died

  • Saint Teresa was also made a doctor of the church in 1970
