THE EPIC BATTLE

IDENTIFYING THE ISSUE

ON THE PRODUCTION SIDE

  • Overwhelming pre-existing queue of work
  • Limited resources / manpower
  • Overlapping deadlines
  • Little or no creative direction / assets

On the sales side

  • Overly demanding / clueless clients
  • Little or no resources from the client
  • Project creeping (from the client)
  • Looming budgets
  • Expectations of administration

WHERE THEY CLASH

  • Sales: We aren't being taken seriously
  • Production: No one respect what it takes to produce
  • Internal Systems / Communiques are flawed
  • Most communication is in text where tone can be applied

Painful things we say

From Sales to Production

  • "Can't we just..."
  • "I need this ASAP"
  • Make it "Pop" / "Sexy" / "Sound Big" / "Sound Epic"
  • Trying to sell / use sales strategies on the producers

From production to sales

  • "We can't do that" or "No"
  • "I need more direction"
  • "You don't understand"
  • Start throwing around jargon that will completely confuse you

WHY THIS DISCHORD CANNOT CONTINUE

  • Both departments are KEY to making any company successful
  • What both departments do and how they do it is intricate and difficult
  • No real understanding of what the other department does

THE PROBLEM AND THE SOLUTION

HOW DO WE SOLVE IT?

  • Shadowing - learn about the other dept.
  • Involve the other department in your process
  • Create the ideas and products together
  • Address your departmental repeat offenders
  • Be respectful of the ground you gain

HOW DO WE SOLVE IT?

  • OVERCOMMUNICATE with purpose
  • Working System = Management Buy In.
  • Avoid downplaying what it takes to do the job
