DESCRIBTION

  • Salmonella is a rod-shaped bacteria that causes severe diarreah
  • Salmonella is one of the most common food borne illnesses in the US

TRANSMISSION

  • Salmonella bacteria lived in the intestines of animals and people
  • People get salmonella by eating food contaminated with animal feces
  • Common foods contaminated with salmonella include beef, chicken, milk, and eggs

WHO DOES IT VICTIMIZE

  • Around 42,000 cases of salmonella are reported in the US every year
  • Approximately 400 people die from salmonella each year
  • Salmonella can affect anyone but children and the elderly are at higher risk

WHERE IS IT FOUND

  • It is found in food contaminated with animal feces
  • It can be found in places like barns and chicken farms

SYMPTOMS

  • Diarreah
  • Stomach pain
  • Throwing up
  • Fever

DEGREE OF DAMAGE

  • Salmonella infections can be life threatening
  • Can spread from the intestines to the blood stream if not treated

FACTS

  • Most infections occur in the northeast US
  • 75% of salmonella outbreaks are related to Grade A eggs
  • .01% of eggs are infected with salmonella
  • It only takes 15 bacteria cells to infect a human
  • Thorough cooking of food can kill salmonella
