SALMONELLA-(SALMONELLOSIS)

WHAT CAUSES SALMONELLA?

  • Lives in the intestinal tracts of humans and other animals
  • Usually transmitted by eating foods contaminated w. animal feces
  • By the hands of an infected food handler

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTONS OF SALMONELLA?

  • Fever
  • Dehydration
  • Abdominal Cramps
  • Diarrhea

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SET IN?

  • 12-72 Hours.

SALMONELLA AVERAGE PER YEAR

  • Approximately 40,000 cases a year
  • Many milder cases are not reported
  • So infections may be 30 or more times greater

DIAGNOSIS FOR SALMONELLA

  • Based on medical history & a physical exam
  • Stool culture & blood test may be done
  • Doctor will ask about your symptoms
  • Doctor will asks about recent foods eaten

TREATMENT FOR SALMONELLA

  • Resolved in 5-7 days
  • Oral fluids
  • Severe cases use antibiotics

SALMONELLA PREVENTION

  • Cook foods thoroughly
  • Do not eat foods containing raw products
  • Wash hands, & work surfices
  • Don't cross contaminate food
  • Avoid direct contact with reptiles
