Setting the Table

The Setting

  • On a plateau outside of Capernaum
  • Start of Sermon on the Mount
  • Called "the light of the world" here
  • Jesus warns about losing our saltiness in Mark 9:50 and Luke 14:34-35

Matthew 5:13-16

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

The Nature of.....

Salt

  • It’s quiet
  • It’s a catalyst for more
  • It’s a preservative
  • It’s a protection
  • It’s an illustration
  • It's valuable
Makes no noise....only attracts attention when "tasted"

Just goes about its business whether people recognize its presence or not

Catalyst for more.....

needs just a little more salt

or a glass of water

influences the change in temperature in cooking but has no control over the temperature itself

we can be known for giving flavor to life

for our preservative powers

balanced presence and it adds great flavor or preservation, too much leads to barrenness Jer 17:6

known for our purity - pure salt is what is valuable, so valuable in fact that during the times of Jesus many business deals were sealed with salt to symbolize its purity and permanence

as protection - Ezekiel 16:4 tells us that salt was used on baby's skin, making it firmer and easier to clean

Illustration -

Used to describe the presence of believers in this passage

Peace in our hearts in Mark 9:50 - “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.”

The power of gracious speech Col 4:6 - Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

  • It originates in God
  • It is seen in Jesus
  • It is reflected by His followers

Provides guidance Ps 119:105

Sends evil scurrying - John 3:20

purifies us from sin as well - 1 Jn 1:5-7

Originates in God

Let there be light Gen 1:3

No darkness in God 1 Jn 1:5-7

Makes fellowship possible

Seen in God's face Ps 4:6

Seen in Jesus - The light of the world Jn 8:12

Reflected by his followers - as today's passage reminds us.....SHINE! as the light of the world, the only place in Scripture where believers are described as such

SO....

Salt + Light = Glory

Be light - command

Shine! - its what we are here for

no baskets allowed.....

Our method is good works

God gets exalted, singled out as worthy, is credited for what we are able to do for others

How are we uniquely positioned for good works in Sterling Hts MI?

The command means to act now
our place is before men, public
