EQ: What is the Salton Sea

  • Fish kills are caused when dense algea growth consume oxygen in the water.
  • green water= dying algae
  • brown water= large school of fish

The Oak Tree that glows in the dark!!

  • This Oak Tree glows under a full moon on the Southern end of the Salton Sea. Erosion and high toxicity levels from farm runoff has left the Salton Sea increasingly contaminated.

  • The Colrado River transported tons of silt
  • In 1905 engineers built a diversion in the Colorado River to divert water during a flooding

  • The diversion failed and the river filled the area of the salton depression to -195 ft.
  • 1920's the sea reaches -250 ft.
  • The Salton was left alone to be a storage for wastes and and seepage for irrigated lands
