PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS

  • Inorganic
  • Combination of metal and non-metal
  • Often grouped according to the negative ion they contain

Obtaining The Molecules

  • From daily diet
  • Most absorption occurs in small intestines
  • After absorption it's released into bloodstream
  • Then the blood will carry it to different parts of the body that needs it

BODY USING THE MOLECULES

  • Growth and production of:
  • Bones, teeth, hair, blood, nerves, skin, vitamins, enzymes, hormones
  • Healthy functioning of nerve transmission,
  • Blood circulation, fluid regulation, cellular integrity, energy production
  • & Muscle contraction

COMMON EXAMPLES

  • Sodium (Na):table salt, bacon, cheese
  • Magnesium (Mg): fish, bananas
  • Calcium (Ca): nuts, milk

MOLECULE DEPREVATION

  • Calcium: w/out enough,a child's bones do not grow strong and straight
  • Adults bones lose minerals and weaken
  • Iron: body can't make the hemoglobin that it requires to carry energy sustaining oxygen
  • This is called anemia, which leaves you tired and weak
  • Iodine: leads to a goiter (swollen thyroid gland) and reduced production in thyroid hormones;
