SALVADOR DALI

  • Dalí was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work.
  • His painterly skills are often attributed to the influence of Renaissance masters.
  • His best-known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in 1931.

The Family

  • The Dalí family in 1910: Aunt Maria Teresa, mother, father, Salvador Dalí, aunt Catherine
  • (later became second wife of father)
  • Sister Ana Maria and grandmother Ana.

TRAINING IN ART

  • Dalí built a repertoire in the fashion and photography businesses as wetxll.
  • He was also involved in creating textile designs and perfume bottles.
  • Other designs Dalí made for her include a shoe-shaped hat, and a pink belt with lips for a buckle.
  • In 1950, Dalí created a special "costume for the year 2045" with Christian Dior.

THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY

  • In 1931, Dalí painted one of his most famous works, The Persistence of Memory, melting pocket watches.
  • The general interpretation of the work is that the soft watches are a rejection of the assumption that time is rigid or deterministic.

PUBLICITY

  • After his arrival in the United States, Dali engaged in heavy self-promotion.
  • While many of his stunts were seen as antics by art critics, they were later interpreted as performances.
  • His status as an extravagant artist was put to use in several publicity campaigns for Lanvin chocolates.

Politics and personality

  • Salvador Dalí's politics played a significant role in his emergence as an artist.
  • In his youth, he embraced both anarchism and Communism, though his writings tell anecdotes of making radical political statements more to shock listeners than from any deep conviction.
  • This was in keeping with Dalí's allegiance to the Dada movement.
