DIFFERENCES

ANNEXATION

  • Houston- wanted annexation with U.S ASAP
  • Lamar- opposed annexation
  • thought Texas would be fighting for independence

INDIAN POLICY

  • Houston- wanted to reserve peace and gave Indians peace offers
  • Lamar- wanted to rid Texas of Indians because he thought there was
  • no possible way for a peaceful negotiation.

CAPITAL

  • Houston- wanted the capital in Houston, which was Harrisburg when he
  • was president.
  • Lamar- wanted capital in Waterloo and to be renamed Austin.

DEBT ECONOMY

  • Houston- spent less than 600K by the end of his first term by reducing the
  • Texas Navy, making the national debt at $1,250,000.
  • Lamar- debt increased $5,000,000 making the debt about $7 million.
  • He added a navy and spent money fighting Native Americans.

MILITARY

  • Houston- army made up of volunteers, doesn't want an army in a peace
  • time. He cut army to 400 men because he doesn't want to pay them.
  • Lamar- favored a strong military defense, created a navy, then sent the
  • Navy to the Gulf of Mexico.

RELATION WITH MEXICO

  • Houston- wanted to prevent war and restore peace, and
  • ordered Edwin Moore and the navy back to Texas.
  • Lamar- tried to force Mexico to recognize Texas as a republic.
  • Said "Anything that harms Mexico helps Texas."
