INFORMATION ABOUT JONES AS GOVERNOR
- He was a Democrat
- He was the 46th Governor of Lousiana
- He was elected in 1940-1944
THINGS HE DID AS GOVERNOR
HE ESTABLISHED STATE CRIME AND COMMISSION
- Is a non-profit citizen’s organization
- Is dedicated to exposing public corruption
- improving the administration of justice
- reducing crime in order to improve the quality of life in the New Orleans&Baton Rouge
HE INTRODUCED A PROPOSAL FOR A VOLUNTEER STATE GUARD
- Would replace the Federal Bureau of Investigation
- Jones himself didnt introduce this idea, but had someone do it for him
- They are a volunteered defense force
- They go to work when the national guard is deployed
- They are solely under state control and cant be deployed out of Louisiana
He supported the revision of election laws to reduce voter fraud and a constitutional amendment to eliminate the poll tax
MAJOR EVENTS THAT TOOK PLACE
- He was governor in the middle of WWII
- Port traffic increases thanks to barges, intracoastal waterway, railroads, freight lines and air transportation
- Leading exports include petroleum products, iron, steel, corn, and cotton;
- imports are sugar, bananas, coffee and bauxite.
THE LOUISIANA MANEUVERS
- a series of U.S. Army exercises held in Fort Polk, Camp Claiborne, and Camp Livingston
- The exercises,involved 400,000 troops, were designed to evaluate U.S.training,logistics,doctrine,commanders.
- Many Army officers present at the maneuvers later rose to very senior roles in World War II,
- From August to September 1941, the armies fought over 3,400 square miles of Louisiana.
- They fought over navigation rights and strategic points along the Mississippi River.
