In 1836, Houston and the Texas Congress at Columbia in Brazoria County to organize the new government.

SFA was named Secretary of State. But he died a few weeks later.

The city of Houston was picked as the capitol of the Republic of Texas for 3 years. It was one of the only cities in the U.S. that was built intentionally to be a capitol!

DURING HOUSTON'S PRESIDENCY....

  • #militaryprobs
  • The issue of annexation
  • Recognition of Texas
  • Native Americans & Texans
  • Texas Debt

ANNEXATION

Annexation: incorporating a country or territory into another country or territory

Problems with Annexation...

Mexico did not recognize Texas's independence.

Also, Texas was a slave state, which would tip the balance!

The United States government did not want to annex Texas if it meant damaging relations with Mexico.

Anti-slavery groups in the U.S. did not want another extra slave state, because that would mean Congress had more slave states than free states.

President Jackson sent Henry Morfit to Texas on a fact-finding mission.

President Houston sent William H. Wharton and Memucan Hunt to Washington to work for annexation and recognition.

Houston sent J. Pinckney Henderson to France and England for recognition.

Morfit said that the U.S. should delay recognition of Texas. Why do you think?

Wharton and Hunt convinced Congress that Texas had a responsible government.

The European countries did not want to recognize Texas at first, because they didn't want to offend Mexico, but they did eventually.

Why would Houston think that being recognized by European countries would hurry annexation by the U.S.?

More white people started moving in onto Native Americans' land.

What do you think the result of this was?

Pres. Houston called on the Texas Rangers to patrol central Texas.

There were lots of attacks and raids from Indians.

In one attack, the Indians killed several settlers and kidnapped two women and several children.

Houston also worked to improve relations between the Texans and Cherokees.

The Texans made a treaty in 1836 with the Cherokees, where the Cherokees said they would remain peaceful during the fight for independence.

TEXAS DEBT

  • Expenditures became greater than revenue.
  • Texas had unpaid bills from the revolution.
  • Congress put a tariff on goods imported to TX.
