CHAMPLAIN'S DISCOVERY

  • Discovered Quebec on accident in 1608.
  • The strength of the Saguenay River carried him to Quebec.
  • He built 3 two-story buildings with a 12 ft. wide moat around them.

CHAMPLAIN'S LIFE

  • Born August 13, 1574.
  • Started exploring in 1606.
  • Married 12 year old Helene Boulle on December 30, 1610. He was 36.
  • No biological children. Adopted 3 daughters in 1627; Faith, Hope, and Charity.
  • Suffered a severe stroke in October, 1635. Died on Christmas. Age 61.

CHALLENGES: THE DEATH OF THE KING

  • The king was murdered in 1610.
  • The queen had little interest in New France.
  • Many of Samuel's financial supporters were denied court access.

CHALLENGES: THE hURONS

  • The Hurons were a native group that Champlain had become allied with.
  • He spent the winter of 1615 with them.
  • Once, he went on a hunt, got lost, and was forced to wander for 3 days.
  • He then went back to Quebec, before going home to France in July.
