What is a sanction?

  • Sanctions can be described as capital punishment
  • A sanction is a threatened penalty by the government
  • a sanction can be placed for disobeying a law
  • ex. Nazism in Germany
  • Illegal for germans and jews to interact and death could be a penalty.

What is an embargo?

  • an official ban on trade or other commercial activity with a particular country.
  • Embargo's do not encourage globalization.
  • Instead of making the world into one market, embargo's do the opposite.
  • Embargo's affects bussinesses which import/export to different countries.

Canada and Iran: Sanctions and Embargos

  • Canada imposes a complete ban on imports/exports to and from Iran
  • Certain exemptions - (goods allowed to trade) :
  • technology used to purify water for civilian and public health purposes.
  • communication technologies which contribute to internet freedom
  • ex. smartphones

Reasons for Sanctions/Embargos

  • A sanction which allows no trade with UN countries and Iran was placed.
  • Canada and United States created the sanction.
  • Sanctions were imposed because Iran was violating international obligations
  • Stephen Harper said," In response to Iran’s continued illicit nuclear activities,
  • U.S. and Canada have imposed sanctions to prevent nuclear enrichment"

Effects On Globalization

  • Decreases rate of globalization
  • Eliminates Iran's international trade with north american countries
  • Decrease of International Business in Iran decreases Iran's economy
  • Job's will be eliminated due and poverty will become more present in Iran
  • Lack of Infastructure - (no branch plants)
