- After revising my essential Question many times, I ended up with my final version of a totally different topic than I started off with.

- This question falls into the religious category because I will be doing research to compare the symbolism found in nature throughout Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, "The Scarlet Letter," with what scripture reveals about God's great creation and the creator it glorifies

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HOW DOES HAWTHORNE'S SYMBOLIC USE OF NATURE SUPPORT THE BIBLICAL INTERPRETATION OF GOD'S CREATION?

By Skī Kai Isip

- After revising my essential Question many times, I ended up with my final version of a totally different topic than I started off with.

- This question falls into the religious category because I will be doing research to compare the symbolism found in nature throughout Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, "The Scarlet Letter," with what scripture reveals about God's great creation and the creator it glorifies

RESEARCH

- Research for this topic was really hard to find even with using the tools and tricks that we learned about as a class in the iBook, but I did come across a couple that will most likely prove useful
- The one that I will use in the majority of my writing, besides the Bible of course, is an essay on Bartlby.com.

"Hawthorne describes a cold and gray day [in the forest]. This description gives the reader a sense of isolation as well as slight depression. However, the mention of a slight breeze that ruffles the canopy of the forest just enough to let in little flickers of sunshine conveys a fleeting ray of hope that seems to coexist with the gloominess in the scene. In many scenes during the book, moods or prevailing feelings are established through descriptions of the natural surroundings of the characters. This aspect of Hawthorne's writing makes the book deeper and more emotional."

- The Author quotes part of the forest scene in the book which says, "The day was chill and somber. Overhead was a gray expanse of cloud, slightly stirred, however, by a breeze; so that a gleam of flickering sunshine might now and then be seen and its solitary play along the path." As the unnamed author explains, this section is a perfect example on how nature is used as a symbol of hope when all else seem dark.

- i can use this for my essential Question, because one of the main attributes of God is hope. Many people find peace and hope in God and his creation around us, like Hester did.

"THE LIGHT SHINES IN THE DARKNESS, AND THE DARKNESS HAS NOT OVERCOME IT."
John 1:5

- This verse, i believe, represents the small bit of hope in the world for Hester that couldn't be overcome
- I will be using the Bible, as I said earlier, as my main resource
