Scarlet Letter Speech

The Scarlet Letter has provided a story that has educated the public for over a century and a half. The Puritan settlement of this time treated adulterous people differently than our generation does today, but who pays attention to the children that come from these men and women of “great sin”? In the Scarlet Letter, the Puritans believed that because Pearl came into the world through a sinful action, that she must be evil. They called her a demon-child, a little witch in the making, yet she had not been the one to sin. Matthew 18:3 says, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you change and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus just said that children are born of innocence, they do not understand the sins that are committed, so how can they be considered evil or sinful?

How has society’s view changed for the better about children born from adultery? Well, if you look upon our general public today, you can see that not all people believe that children born through adultery are demonic persons. The Puritanic view that once dominated has decreased in rank, and the modern world has come up with their own ideas.

First, lets think about what goes on in the eyes of the adulterous parents, their families, their friends, and their neighbors. Do they look at these children differently, as mistakes, a reminder, something that tears apart the lives of loved ones, and damages relationships. You can't blame the child, you can only blame the people who made the decision to commit to another man or woman. One of my sources had an excellent quote to describe my main idea. This quote was taken from the Dr. Phil Show, “Don’t let your feelings about the affair reflect on your treatment of the child. The child is innocent, and had nothing to do with the actions of your partner.” This article by the Marriage Missions International has created an understanding that children are a gift from God. The author of “A Child Born of Adultery” explains that, when you look at a young boy or girl, can you really tell whether they were an accident or on purpose, whether they are unloved or loved. The parents do not give them their titles, they earn them on their own.

These children deserve just as much love as other children. It is not their fault, so do not blame them for your own mistakes. God gave them life for a purpose, so let them fulfill what great plans God has in store for these children. Thank you!
