• They believed that Christ should not be shown in only a picture

• The pope was in charge
• Liked icons because it was an easy way to spread Christianity

WHO RULES THE EMPIRE?

• The Roman Catholic ( west ) ruler was Charlemagne, Holy Roman Emperor
• Eastern Orthodox ( east ) ruler was Empress Irene
• The Roman Catholic did not like Empress Irene because she was a woman
• Eastern Orthodox disliked Charlemagne
• Because they thought they ruled most of Rome

MARRIAGE AND LANGUAGE

• Eastern Orthodox felt Priests could marry
• Roman Catholic felt you should not because you should only worship God
• Roman Catholic spoke in Latin
• Eastern Orthodox spoke in Greek and other local languages
