What is a School-Based Enterprise?

Any activity through which students produce goods and services for sale to or use by people other than themselves.

School-Based Enterprises aim to prepare students for the world of work and for further education.

Purpose: transferable skills consistent with 21st century skills, including critical thinking, problem solving, communication skills, and collaboration

Why are they important?

Positive outcomes include:

  • More realistic expectations about their future
  • More crystalized or stable decisions about possible careers
  • Greater job satisfaction in young adulthood

Help teach skills employers are looking for

  • Communication
  • Interaction with customers
  • Working with others
  • Teamwork 
  • Strategies for adapting and learning

"Adolescents who understand themselves and understand the world of work are in a better position to find work environments that allow them to express themselves or what is important to them" (Hutchins & Akos).

Research shows that these programs can be particularly effective for youth who are at risk for dropping out.

Determine what kind of store will benefit your school and community environment as well as your students.

What needs to be done to make this work? Where will it be? Who will it involve? What resources do we need? Who could we get to sponsor us? Who else in the school needs to be involved? Who else in the school should be involved?
