WHAT ARE AVALANCHES?

  • Avalanches occur on a mountain
  • Steeper the slope on a mountain, the faster, dangerous the avalanche
  • Avalanches can be made by small or big vibrations
  • When the snow and ice comes off a mountain side, that is an avalanche
  • You can see an avalanche happen from far away

MT. HUASCARAN

  • Mt. Huascaran has made one of the largest avalanches in history
  • This large mountain can be found in Peru
  • Mt. Huascaran reaches 6,768m above sea level
  • Mt. Huascaran is the highest mountain in Peru
  • Attracts many tourists each year

MT. HUASCARAN AVALANCHE

  • The avalanche happened on the 31st of May, 1970
  • It went for 11 miles
  • An earthquake triggered the avalanche by its vibrations
  • The avalanche moved downhill at 100mph
  • There was roughly around 80 million cubic feet of ice, snow, mud and rock

MT. HUASCARAN AVALANCHE

  • The avalanche buried the two towns Yungay and Ranrahirca
  • Killed around 80,000 people and left one million homeless
  • Happened off the coast of Peru
  • No one knows why this earthquake triggered such a large avalanche
  • The avalanche was around 3,000 ft wide

WHAT THEY COULD'VE DONE

  • To minimise the impact they could've had an avalanche siren
  • Told people to evacuate their houses when the earthquake started
  • Build a forest
  • Avalanche posts

SURVIVORS

  • There were not many survivors in the avalanche
  • In one of the towns, only 50 out of 500 people lived
  • Those who did live, were left with serious brain conditions, from the cold
  • Others were left with bones and muscles torn and severely damaged
  • One thing that can not be fixed is the fresh memories that bring grief each time they are remembered

FINANCIAL COST

  • Financial cost was very big
  • 4 towns were destroyed and needed repair
  • Survivors ended more money to fix their injuries, homes and lives
  • Many people needed help for their lost loved ones to be found
