Why this NAME?

  • Asio flammeus galapagoensis
  • Asio:  a genus of European owls
  • Flammeus:  Short-eared owl  
  • Galapagoensis:  Galapogos sub-species

Distribution

  • Short-Eared found worldwide
  • North and South America
  • On 12 of 14 Galapagos Islands
  • Majority inhabit Santiago island 

Adaptations

  • Wings and feathers
  • Low nesting
  • 270 degree head turn 
  • Eyes able to see in dark (low light)

Habits & Feeding

  • Relatively quiet
  • Make a "voohoohoohoo" sound
  • Mainly eats meadow voles
  • Eats ground squirrels, mice, etc.
  • Feeds at dawn and dusk

Habitat

  • Wide-open spaces 
  • Salt-Marshes 
  • Mountain Meadows
  • Grassland prairies
