PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Location And Climate:
The chaparral biome is located primarily in California. Its climate is normally quite hot and dry.
Location And Climate (cont.):
Avg. annual temperature:53-65 degrees Fahrenheit.
Avg. winter temperature: 38-58 F
Avg. spring temperature: 46-71 F
Avg. summer temperature: 58-92 F
Avg. fall temperature: 50-78 F
Avg. annual precipitation: 12-40in/year
Environmental Factors:
The soil in the chaparral biome is typically quite loose and dry, making growth of plants other than scrub and desert plants impossible. There are frequent forest fires due to the dry, warm climate.
The ceanothus plant is quite resilient and grows back very quickly after forest fires.
The cercocarpus plant is very resistant to harsh environments.
The yucca plant is unique because of its symbiotic relationship with the yucca moth.
The California buckwheat is particularly effective at attracting bees.
California thrasher: these birds are native to the chaparral biome and eats insects and small invertebrates.
Western scrub jay: these are scavengers that forage for food. They will also eat snakes and small animals.
The costa's hummingbird: they can slow their heart rates to hibernate for extended periods.
The greater roadrunner: they can cooperate with one another to kill large snakes.
