1556 SHAANXI EARTHQUAKE

The Shaanxi Earthquake is also referred to as Jiajing Great Earthquake.

Date: January 23,1556

Magnitude: 8.0 on the Ritcher Magnitude Scale

Mercalli Intensity: It was rated (XI) 11

Tectonic Plates Involved: Eurasian Plate

*Duration*
The Earthquake struck in late evening, with aftershocks continuing through the following morning.

*Aftershock*
Aftershocks continued several times a month for half a year.

*Boundary*
The event did not take place on a plate boundary, but in a fault named Weihe Basin. The fault that Shaanxi is located is a normal dip-slip fault. Shaanxi China is located not on top of a continental plate boundary, but on top of a dip-slip fault, which could have been part of the reason why there was such a deadly earthquake.

Lives Lost: 830,000

Injured: There were many injured. The exact amount is unknown.

Most houses were completely destroyed. Buildings and Structures were also ruined since they weren't in good condition before the Earthquake.

The cost of damage done by the Earthquake is almost impossible to measure in modern terms.

*More Info*
The Shaanxi Earthquake's epicenter was in the Wei River Valley in Shaanxi Province. In Huaxian every single building and home was demolished, killing more than half the residents of the city, with a death toll estimated in the hundreds of thousands.
