RUST LAB BY: JAWAD & ISAAC

Question:
Which liquid causes an iron nail to rust faster, Coca-Cola, vinegar, apple juice, or water?

Hypothesis: We think that different types of liquids cause an iron nail to rust faster and if so coca-cola with cause a nail to rust faster than the other to liquids, because it is the most acidic.

Procedure:
1. Pour 15ml of coca-cola into a beaker and set it to the side.
2. Attain another beaker and pour 15ml of vinegar into the 2nd beaker.
3. Attain another beaker and pour 15ml of water into the 3rd beaker.
4. Attain another beaker and pour 15ml of Apple juice into the 4th and final beaker.
5. Submerge one iron nail into the 1st beaker with 15ml with the coca-cola.
6. Submerge one iron nail into the 2nd beaker with 15ml with the vinegar.

Pt 2
7. Submerge one iron nail into the 3rd beaker with 15ml with the water.
8. Submerge one iron nail into the 4th beaker with 15ml with the apple juice.
9. Place beakers side by side, and let them sit for 2 weeks.
10. After two weeks of sitting in the liquids pull each nail out of the individual beakers and set them on a table 2 inches or more apart from each other.
11. Examine each nail closely.
12. On a scale of 1-10(1 being the least rustic) rate each nail individually.

Materials:
4 medium sized beakers
4 iron nails
15ml with the coca-cola
15ml with the vinegar
15ml with the water
15ml with the apple juice
A pair of tweezers

Intro:
We will observe which type of liquid rusts the iron nail, (our independent variable) faster. Our hypothesis is the coke will react the most with coke, because it is the most acidic and pressurized. Oxidation, also known as the process of rust is a chemichal reaction. In our case iron is reacting with oxygen to form rust. After researching on this topic we found out that apple juice and water are more likely to form rust. The coke just changes nail into a blackish color, while the vinager keeps the nail in perfect condition because it contains a lot of sodium.
