SCIENCE FAIR

My question:

Does liquid refract a laser from a laser pointer?

My Hypothesis:

If you shine a laser from a laser pointer into clear liquids(water) then it will refract but if you shine the laser into denser liquids it will not refract.

MATERIALS/VARIABLES

  • Clear glass
  • Laser pointer
  • Book (Bible)
  • Two pieces of paper for refracting marks
  • Variables: diet coke, milk, water, juice, 7-up

PROCEDURE

  • Put liquid in glass
  • Shine laser into glass facing straight ahead
  • Record what liquid refracts the laser
  • Change the liquid
  • Repeat

DISTANCE OF REFRACTION

DATA FOR THE GRAPH

  • Juice: refracted 2.1cm from base point
  • Water: refracted 1.9cm from base point
  • 7-up: refracted 2.1cm from base point
  • Milk: the laser did not go through the milk
  • Diet Coke: refracted 2cm from base point

Background Research:

I found that the other people who did the experiment got results of the laser refracting in clear liquids like water.

Conclusion:

My hypothesis was right. The laser did refract through the liquid.
