NEWTON'S LAWS

NEWTON'S FIRST LAW

  • An object at rest stays at rest unless acted upon an outside force.
  • Examples:
  • Bowling ball rolling down a lane
  • Seatbelts
  • Airbags

HOW IS MASS RELATED TO INERTIA?

  • Small mass=less inertia
  • Large mass=more inertia

NEWTON'S SECOND LAW

  • The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force on the object and inversely proportional to the objects mass.
  • Examples:
  • Pushing a swing with a skinny person vs heavier person
  • Kicking a chair out from under a skinny person vs heavier person
  • Pushing a sled with a skinny person vs heavier person

FORMULA FOR 2ND LAW

F=MXA OR FORCE=MASS X ACCELERATION

SI UNIT FOR FORCE

NEWTON

NEWTON'S THIRD LAW

  • For every action force, there is an equal and opposite reaction force
  • Examples:
  • Shooting a gun and then falling backwards
  • Pushing of a skateboard and moving forward
  • Slamming on the breaks and jerking forward

FORMULA FOR MOMENTUM

P=MXV OR MOMENTUM=MASS X VELOCITY
