What is Acid Rain?

Acid rain is formed when power plants give off suffer dioxide and nitrogen oxides, and then mix with clouds which forms acid rain.

ACID RAIN FACTS

  • Acid rain eats away anything made if magnesium.
  • Acid rain can cause a mass killing to trees.
  • Even people in exceptional health could have their lungs damaged by this acid air.
  • Stone buildings and monuments are targets of damage from acid rain.
  • Most acid rain problems are caused by large coal burner plants in the West.

HOW ACID RAIN WORKS

What are Radiation Waves?

Radiation is waves that Cary energy. They gave a certain amount of energy in each wave. This depends on how fast the wave moves. If it moves faster, it means it caries more energy.

FACTS ABOUT RADIATION WAVES

  • They can bounce around the earth.
  • They can bounce off of clouds
  • They can travel great distances with very little power
  • You can talk to spaces craft hovering out in space with radio waves.
  • You can bounce them off the moon, and hear the ones that return to you.

HOW RADIATION WAVES WORK

Types of wave length

The height of the wave represents the Amplitude. The length represents the amount of energy the wave carries.

What is acid?

Acid is a molecule or other entity that can donate a proton or accept an electron pair in reactions.

DIFFERENT EXAMPLES OF ACIDS

  • Battery acid
  • Lemon juice
  • Vinegar
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Lime juice

FACTS ABOUT ACID

  • Tastes sour
  • Can dissolve some medals
  • Turns litmus red
  • Rain is a very weak acid
  • Has a ph of higher than 7

What are bases?

A base is a substance that accepts hydrogen ions.

EXAMPLES OF BASES

  • Baking soda
  • Bleach
  • Soapy water
  • Lye
  • Milk of magnesia

FACTA ABOUT BASES

  • It burns your skin
  • It tastes bitter
  • When it reacts with oil and grease, it makes soap
  • It dissolves dirt and grease
  • It is highly corrosive

What is UV rays?

Ultraviolet light is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than that of visible light, but longer than X-rays.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT UV RAYS

  • UV light can damage the human skin.
  • Many things that are invisible to the human eye become visible under UV light.
  • Humidity may increase the effects of UV light.
  • Ultraviolet traps are used to eliminate various small flying insects.
  • UV light can destroy many types of virus, mould and bacteria.

What is the ozone?

The ozone is a layer in the earth's stratosphere at an altitude of about 6.2 miles (10 km) containing a high concentration of ozone, which absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth from the sun.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE OZONE LAYER

  • Ozone is a molecule containing three oxygen atoms
  • It is blue in color and has a strong odor
  • ozone molecules are constantly formed and destroyed in the stratosphere
  • The ozone layer absorbs a portion of the radiation from the sun
