ASTRONOMERS IN HISTORY

A QUICK TIMELINE

The name of the astronomers
Aristotle
Aristarchus
Ptolemy
Copernicus
Kepler

Aristotle
Aristotle thought Earth was the center of all things. He thought that if Earth went around the sun, then the relative positions of the stars would change as earth moves

ARISTARCHUS

  • Aristarchus is reported to have proposed a heliocentric model of the solar system
  • Aristarchus attempted to measure the relative distances to the moon and sun

PTOLEMY

  • He believed that a celestial body traveled at a constant speed Ina perfect circle
  • it allowed prediction of the motion of the plants over the years. G

COPERNICUS

  • Copernicus thought that Ptolemy's model of the solar system was too complicated.
  • Copernicus thought that Ptolemy's models of the solar system should have been in perfect circles

KEPLER

  • After carefully analyzing observations of the plants he realized that requiring planetary motions to be exactly circular did not fit the observations perfectly
  • Kepler used a formula what is now called Kepler's formula
