THE ROCK CYCLE

SEDIMENTARY ROCK

WHAT IS A SEDIMENTARY ROCK?

A SEDIMENTARY ROCK IS

  • Formed by erosion
  • Sediments are moved from 1 place to another
  • They form at or nears earths surface
  • There is no heat or pressure involved
  • 3 different types is rocks
  • Clastic:made of fragments of rock cemented together with calcite or Quartz
  • Chemical sedimentary: minerals crystallize out of solution to become rock
  • Organic sedimentary: remains of plants and animals
  • Sediments-particles and other once living organisms
  • Sedimentary-rock formed when particles of rock and other materials are pressed together
  • Erosion-moves sediment from place to place flowing water, wind, and ice
  • Deposition-sediments are laid down
  • Cementation-sediments are glued together forming the rock

METAMORPHIC ROCK

WHAT IS METAMORPHIC ROCK

  • Meaning to change shape
  • Changes with temperature and pressure but will still remain solid
  • Usually takes place deep in the earth
  • 2 different types of rock
  • Foliated:contain aligned grains of flat minerals
  • Non-foliated:mineral grains are not arranged in plains or bands
  • Metamorphic-rock formed from heat and pressure deep beneath the earths surface
  • Examples of rocks are granite, gneiss, limestone, marble, sandstone, and quartzite

IGNEOUS ROCK

WHAT IS AN IGNEOUS ROCK

  • A rock formed from magma or lava that cools and hardens
  • Instrusive:formed from magma.formed below the earths surface.magma cools slowly forming larger crystals
  • Extrusive:formed from lava.formed above earths surface.lava cools fast forming smaller crystals
  • Example of some igneous rocks are granite and basalt

THE ROCK CYCLE

WHAT IA THE ROCK CYCLE

  • It's a group of changes
  • Igneous can change into sedimentary or metamorphic
  • Metamorphic can change into igneous or sedimentary
  • Sedimentary can change into metamorphic or igneous
  • The rock cycle will never stop
